Algonquin Park is one of those places that always feels worth the drive. For anyone who loves quiet trails, big skies, and the chance to slow down and really notice the details, it is a place that never disappoints.
As a wildlife and nature photographer based in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, I’m always drawn to places that offer a mix of movement, texture, and changing light. Algonquin Park gives you all of that and more.
Algonquin Park has a way of making even a simple outing feel memorable. The mix of forests, lakes, and open stretches of wilderness creates endless opportunities for nature photography.
For wildlife photographers, it is also a place that rewards patience. You may not always get the shot you planned, but you often come home with something unexpected and worthwhile. I went with a list of animals I wanted to photograph, but ended up seeing animals I did not expect, especially a Peregrine Falcon in the Old Airfield at Mew Lake.
I really wanted to see a bull moose. I got to see that and also a moose cow and calf (see photos).
The best part of this trip was the variety. From early morning light to quieter moments later in the day, the park offered a beautiful reminder of how much changes when you slow down and pay attention.
That is one of the things I love most about working in nature photography. The subject is never really static. The light shifts, the weather moves in, and the landscape keeps changing right along with it.
If you are planning your own photography trip to Algonquin Park, a few simple things can help make the experience smoother:
Nature photography often works best when you leave room for the unexpected.
Trips like this are a reminder that photography is about more than the final image. It is also about the experience of being there, noticing details, and taking time to connect with the landscape.
Whether you are a photographer yourself or simply love Ontario’s wild spaces, Algonquin Park has a way of leaving a lasting impression.
For me, it was another great reminder of why I love photographing wildlife and nature across northern Ontario and beyond. Algonquin Park stole my heart and I will be back, as often as I can!
